I decided that I wanted to try drawing stylized horses since. I took a reference photo of a horse and redrew it multiple times in different styles/characterizations. Then I chose my favorite character design and created a 9" tall 3D maquette using a wire armature and sculpey clay.
This was originally a piece I did when I was first learning how to do digital illustration, so now that I have a better understanding of how to paint digitally I decided I would refine it and change the little girl into the character style I have decided to use for all my other pieces.
For these three pieces, I looked at other paintings or photographs with colors that appealed to me, broke the colors down to figure out how much of each color was used in the image and then applied it to my own illustration. This assignment was very helpful and is something that will definitely help me with figuring out nice colors for future illustrations.
Using the contrast of value or saturation your eye should be led to a different focal point on the first two images. The last image is to show what would happen if there was no contrast of value or saturation but just hue (color).
I tried two different analogous color schemes for this piece, I like the colors in the red/orange scheme but I think the Blue/Green one works for the mood!
